Age 8: It's my 8th birthday! Mom and Dad got me a toy car. I'm so happy! Age 9: Dad took us out for a big dinner. My little brother slipped in the restroom, and Dad and I laughed so hard. Mom jokingly scolded us on the way home. Age 10: Mom passed away, and no one knows what happened to Dad. I don't feel like celebrating my birthday this year... Age 12: For my birthday, Dad gave me a Border Collie! They say it's the smartest breed. I named him Buster. I'm so happy! Age 13: Dad has been homeschooling me. He's a writer, but he never lets me read his books! Age 14: Buster hasn't been eating much lately. Dad said it's just because we switched his dog food and he'll get used to it. I really admire Dad; he knows everything! Age 15: Dad's book became a bestseller and even won an award! For my birthday, he cooked a special meal himself. It was delicious, but for some reason, the sound of chopping meat in the kitchen gives me a splitting headache. Age 16: Dad brushed my hair today. He stroked my cheek and said sadly that I look more and more like Mom every day. I know he misses her. My heart aches for him. Age 17: I finally read the book. I feel so conflicted, but I finally understand why my little brother showed it to me. I'm sorry, little brother, but I love Dad! I remember Dad once said my brother is terrified of getting burned. So, I poured boiling water all over him. Looking into his despairing eyes, I smiled happily.
