Midnight Presents

Dad told me to go to bed early tonight. But deep in the night, a rhythmic thudding against the front door woke me. Hoping Dad was sneaking in the presents, I cracked my bedroom door open and peeked into the living room. It was beautifully decorated. Our Christmas tree was a glistening red, heavily draped with wet, lumpy ornaments. A massive, unstuffed turkey was sprawled across the dining table. Inside the fireplace, a green Santa Claus was crumpled in the ashes. As I smiled warmly at the festive scene, the dull knocking at the front door started again...
