The False Back

Living alone in a cheap apartment, my nightly ritual always ended with securing the heavy deadbolt on my front door. At 2:00 AM, the unmistakable rustle of fabric from my closet jolted me awake. I flipped on the light, threw the closet doors wide open, and found absolutely nothing—just my clothes hanging perfectly still. Comforted by the empty space, I went back to sleep. The medical examiner estimated my time of death to be around 4:00 AM.
