The Silver Stylus
Puzzle
Legend held that the reclusive illustrator, Silas Vance, possessed a 'Silver Stylus' capable of sketching the true soul of any word spoken to it.
At his private gala, Vance decided to demonstrate. He whispered "Joy" to the nib. The pen moved on its own, sketching not a smile, but the cold, empty corner of a windowless room.
He frowned, then whispered "Fear." The silver tip jaggedly etched a heavy, studded leather belt.
Finally, forcing a confident smile for his guests, Vance commanded the word: "Father."
The pen froze. It didn't draw a portrait. Instead, the tip drove hard into the paper, trembling violently, until the ink cartridge exploded. A thick, ugly black stain spread across the page, drowning the white space in darkness.
"Defective junk," Vance spat, wiping his hands.
But I stared at the ruin. The pen wasn't broken. It was just... accurate.
