The Safest Place

A mother gently strokes little Leo, whispering a tearful 'I'm sorry,' before placing him into a cold, heavy steel safe. She spins the combination dial. With a heavy *clank*, Leo is sealed inside the pitch-black, airtight vault. She then locks the front door and leaves town. That night, a catastrophic disaster strikes, reducing her house to absolute ruins. The next morning, rescue workers dig the safe out of the devastating wreckage. When the thick steel door is finally pried open, the mother stares at Leo inside, drops to her knees, and breaks down in agonizing sobs. The sheriff standing nearby doesn't arrest her. Instead, he slowly takes off his hat, his eyes welling with tears, and gently consoles the weeping woman.
