The thick smoke clears over a desolate, snow-covered field. Jack and his golden retriever lie in a gruesome, obliterated mess. Despite being in an open clearing far from the water, Jack is wearing heavy, waterproof chest waders. There are no landmines, no gas lines, and no military activity for hundreds of miles—only a deadly explosion that found them both in the middle of nowhere.
