Goodnight from the Shadows

Every night, my mother would stand in the dark hallway outside my room, whisper 'Goodnight,' and leave. I never once saw her face clearly. But last night, she didn't come. The next morning, the police knocked on our door. That was when I finally understood why she always stayed in the shadows, and why I would never hear her voice again.
